Job Description

Responsible Travel is looking for a Managing Editor based in our Brighton office. The position's main responsibilities will be:

  • Direct management of the publishing team, currently seven writers, with an expectation that the team will grow over time.
  • Copyediting and proofreading texts (articles and travel guides), ensuring all content is in line with Responsible Travel's products, policies and messaging, as well as in keeping with the house style. Maintaining best SEO practices throughout.
  • Ensure deadlines are met and productivity levels are maintained by the writing team.
  • Submitting monthly publishing reports to the directors. Use of Excel, Asana, occasionally Webmaster Tools or Google Analytics.
  • Reviewing of published travel guides (both newly published and older guides that need updating). Reviewing images, maps and checking for updated information.
  • Occasionally planning and delivering presentations at events run by Responsible Travel or for external organisations, on themes such as storytelling, content writing or responsible tourism.
  • Ensuring tasks are added correctly to project management system (Asana), assigned, submitted and published.
  • Familiarising yourself with various aspects of responsible tourism, and Responsible Travel's guidelines and policies.
  • Conducting staff annual appraisals and probation reviews.
  • Recruitment and training of new staff. Occasional training of current staff.
  • Liaising with other team managers with regards to web design, communications and PR.
  • Occasional involvement in larger projects, such as researching issues for responsible tourism campaigns and working with other staff and interns on these.
  • Directing and planning the content publishing strategy with the directors and other senior managers.

As part of this role, you will receive training in using our database. There may be the occasional opportunity to write articles or short guides. 

There are currently six Travel Writers and one Assistant Editor reporting to the Managing Editor, and you will report directly to the Commercial Director. 

We see the split of the role as roughly three days editing, 1.5 days managing and 0.5 days on other tasks. 

About you

  • You have previous editorial or publishing experience.
  • You have a very good eye for detail, and experience of accurately copyediting and proofreading texts.
  • Previous management experience successfully leading a team.
  • Experience in training.
  • Good eye for detail.
  • Good eye for a story and what the customer would like to read.
  • Good commercial skills with the ability to focus the team on what we sell and linking this to what we write.
  • Understanding of SEO and Excel.
  • Interest in and experience of travel and a desire to promote more responsible tourism around the world.
  • Personal interest in conservation, animal welfare and/or human rights.

Salary, benefits and application details

  • Salary: £40,000.
  • Holiday: 21 days' paid holiday plus bank holidays rising to a maximum of 26 depending on the length of employment.
  • Responsible Travel has a 10% profit share scheme which you will be part of
  • 4% employer pension contributions (3% minimum by law).
  • Half day paid volunteering per month.
  • Hours: Full time (9am-5pm, Monday-Friday including a one-hour break).
  • Location: Responsible Travel's office in central Brighton.
  • This is a permanent position.
