The Legal Director of EMEA and APAC will be directly responsible for all legal matters in EMEA and APAC, as well as some global matters. This role reports to the Chief Legal Officer (“ CLO ”), Dylan Marvin, who is based in New York. This role will be the first legal hire to join the CLO. This role will be based in either our Brighton or London office. This role involves: Partnering with the EMEA/APAC commercial teams on contract negotiations with customers, as well as negotiation of vendor contracts. Advising the People Team on EMEA/APAC employment matters, such as employment disputes and redundancies. Supporting general corporate work in EMEA/APAC such as board minutes, board resolutions, legal entity establishment, cap table/equity management, and work required related to fundraising events. Taking over management of Brandwatch’s worldwide trademark and patent portfolio. Leading Brandwatch’s global insurance portfolio, in conjunction with the CLO and Brandwatch’s insurance brokers. Supporting the Data Protection Officer with data privacy compliance, including drafting and negotiating DPAs. Advising the CLO and other execs and managers about various legal and non-legal issues. Working with the CLO on various special projects, including updating Brandwatch’s terms and conditions, building out contract negotiation playbooks, developing a system of metrics for the legal department, identifying the need for and implementing legal technology, consolidating use of outside counsel. Travelling to other EMEA/APAC offices as/when needed, likely no more frequently than a few times per quarter. If you are based in London, you will be required to work 5-10 days a month in our Brighton office. Because we want a great candidate, the details of the role are flexible. If you like everything but can’t travel for whatever reason, then apply. If the thought of managing an insurance portfolio makes you feel ill, then apply. We want to find the right person for this role. We’re happy to tailor the details of this role to what makes sense (and is compelling) to you. Things about you that would be indicators of success in this role: You’ll ideally have 4-8 years’ experience, preferably some of which is in house at a fast-growing technology company. You do not have (that large of) an ego. Legal is a support function, and its important that the legal team is responsive to commercial needs. You are a team-player and collaborate with colleagues across the business. You are a clear and concise verbal and written communicator. You are great at distilling complex concepts into easily digestible morsels of information. You are pragmatic and able to compromise. You understand that there is often not a “right” answer, and are comfortable advising people what to do in ambiguity. You are able to operate autonomously without a lot of supervision. You will excel at prioritizing your workload and being efficient. You are conscious about what work you choose to do and what work you do not do, ensuring that you are adding value to the company (or protecting value for the company). Not everything needs to be perfect. You will be a good judge of when excellence is required and when “good enough” is good enough. You will be kind and have empathy. You will deal with tough situations, but you don’t have to be tough to work with.. Language skills would be helpful, particularly French, Spanish, or German. Finally, you will be a UK solicitor or otherwise eligible to register/work as in house counsel in England and Wales. How this role builds into your next role: Brandwatch is an extraordinary place to work. It may seem weird to be mentioning your post-Brandwatch life before you’ve even applied for the role. After a few years, you will be well qualified to join a start-up at the Series B/C stage as the first in-house hire.
