One of the most important things in life is working out what you want to do: for leisure, for achievement, and for work.
Work takes up so much time that it’s critical to be both happy with where you are and what you’re doing. But how do we go about working this out in a fast-paced, hectic world where money seems the most important thing?
Here’s three quick steps to get you on the right track to selecting the perfect job for you:
Being passionate about what you’re doing, or at least what you’re working towards, is a massive step towards being happy in work. This doesn’t mean you have to be out saving the world, stopping wars or ridding society of hunger (though all those things would be amazing). If you’re passionate about finishing projects that you start, or about helping a local business grow their online presence, or finding a client the perfect gift for their grandparent, or anything else you could think of, then maybe you can find a job you can be passionate about.
But to know what you’re passionate about is just one part of it: you should also know what you like doing. There’s no point getting a job writing code for a local business’s website to help them, when you might be better suited to handling the print marketing side of things, whilst achieving the same end aim. Think about not just what you’re passionate about, but what you’d be happy doing.
And whilst it’s easy (and common) for people to talk about looking for jobs you’ll be happy in rather than letting money dictate your search, we still think money is something that should come into calculations. After all, if you’re desperate to pay off a house, or save for retirement, or send you kids to a good school, are you going to be happy in a job that doesn’t achieve that? That’s why it’s important to consider this aspect alongside the normal happiness considerations.
