We all know that one thing for sure about working in an office is that it is going to be stressful. Sometimes the stress comes in small chunks, that are easy to manage, however, sometimes the stress can be overwhelming and extend over a longer period of time.
When you feel stressed out at work, there is a good chance that the stress will overwhelm you, that it will take you away from your career and focusing on progressing up the ladder. But, what can you do to resolve this? How can you beat office stress and give the confidence that you need to progress your career where you want it to go?
Money can be a huge stress factor for so many of us and seeing as we get our money from our jobs, it makes sense that you need to think about what you are paid and if there is any room for movement. Asking for a pay rise isn’t always the easiest thing to do, however, if you have enough data to support why you deserve a pay rise and remove any type of emotion from the request, then there is nothing to say that you won’t get it agreed.
There are going to be times when you disagree with what is being said within your work setting. Some people may sit back and say nothing, however, this is going to cause nothing but feelings of stress. Another approach that many people take is that of confrontation. Confrontation is only ever going to shut down any communication that you may have, however, that doesn’t mean that you can’t ever disagree with anything that is being said. You just need to approach it tactfully, take any personal feelings out of the equation, and be prepared to back up why you disagree and then you should find it goes a lot smoother.
More and more people are deciding to take a flexible approach to their working hours. It helps them to not only achieve that elusive work life balance, but also alleviate some feelings of stress that you may have. Flexible working hours should be given consideration by your employer, however, you do need to be able to put forward a clear plan for how you will focus on your work and any solutions that you may have to challenges that could arise.
Stress in our careers can push us forward to achieve what we want for the future. Especially if it comes in the form of a tight deadline or perhaps a high pressure project. However, if the stress comes along for an extended period, then you may find that it actually has a negative impact on your own wellbeing, as well as how you are progressing through your career.
Instead of accepting stress as part and parcel of your working life, we suggest that you find a way to improve it and change it. After all, if you want to get ahead within your career, then you are going to need to make sure that you think about the ways that you can combat stress and move through it, rather than getting stuck.
